A Simple Guide to Snoring, Treatment and Related Diseases (A Simple Guide to Medical Conditions)
Introduction

Ode to Snoring

Snoring is vibration of the tissues lining the air passages

It occurs mainly during sleep in all ages

The tongue may be large and backward protruding

It may block the air passage and cause snoring

Other causes may be adenoids, deviated nasal septum

Inadequate muscle tone of the palate and tongue

Large tonsils and uvula are causes of snoring

The narrowed passages vibrate during breathing

Systemic causes are hypothyroidism with large tongue

Or acromegaly, obesity and acid reflux with heart burn

There may be morning headaches, irritability or depression

The sleep is un-refreshed and there is poor concentration

Treatment is the use of Continuous Positive Airway Pressure

Weight reduction helps improve air breathing measures

Sometime removal of adenoids and tonsils may be necessary

To increase the air space and treat snoring with surgery

-An original poem by Kenneth Kee

Interesting Tips about the Snoring

A Healthy Lifestyle

1. Take a well Balanced Diet

2. Treatment

A. Non Surgical treatment:

a. Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP)

CPAP administered by mask through the nose is the single most effective least invasive treatment for Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

b. Oral appliances that pushes the mandible forward and prevent it from falling open during sleep

c. Nasal Congestion treatment:

Patients with nasal congestion and blockage should be treated with antihistamine and decongestant

d. Weight reduction:

Any obese patients should have at least 10% of his weight reduced over a 6 months period

B. Surgical Treatments:

a. Surgery on the upper pharyngeal airway (uvula and palate)

b. Radiofrequency reduction of the palate and uvula shrinks the tissues of these and is indicated in simple snorer or mild OSA.

b. Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) surgery includes uvulectomy, palatal releasing and shortening incisions.

c. Surgery of the Tongue base Radiofrequency reduction is done for mild cases

d. Maxillomandibular Advancement is the best surgical treatment for snoring

3. Keep bones and body strong

Bone marrow produces our blood

Eat foods rich in calcium like yogurt, cheese, milk, and dark green vegetables.

Eat foods rich in Vitamin D, like eggs, fatty fish, cereal, and fortified milk.

It is best to do weight-bearing exercise such as walking, jogging, stair climbing, dancing, or lifting weights for 2½ hours a week.

One way to do this is to be active 30 minutes a day at least 5 days a week.

Begin slowly especially if a person has not been active.

6. Do not drink more than 2 alcohol drinks a day for a man or 1 alcohol drink a day for a woman.

Alcohol use also increases the chance of falling and breaking a bone.

Alcohol can affect the neurons and brain cells.

Alcohol can irritate the eye.

7. Stop or do not begin smoking.

It also interferes with blood supply and healing.

Chapter 1

Snoring

Snoring is the noise produced during sleep by vibrations of the soft tissues at the back of the nose and throat.

The noise is created by turbulent flow of air through narrowed air passages.

Snoring is the symptom of spectrum of problems including sleep disorders such as Obstructive Sleep Apnea during which breathing is interrupted during sleep.

A more serious problem related to snoring can occur when those same soft tissues block the air passages at the back of the throat while you are sleeping.

This interferes with the ability to breathe.

The cause of snoring is due to the vibration or flapping of the tissues lining the upper respiratory passages.

1.Inadequate muscle tone of the palate, tongue and pharynx
